James Pearce and Simon Hughes set social media on fire when they reported Liverpool had agreed a deal with Bayern Munich for Thiago Alcantara.
In their article for The Athletic, they confirmed a bid of around £27million had been accepted by the German outfit for the midfielder.
Rumours linking Liverpool with Thiago date back to June 24, when BILD’s Christian Falk claimed there were whispers at Bayern.
After waiting for three months and feeding on every scrap of information from European and South American sources, fans were anxious.
Thiago was also linked with moves to Manchester United and Barcelona, with some reports suggesting Liverpool had walked away.
But these fears were put to rest when The Athletic dropped the news that a deal had been agreed with the Premier League champions.
Tweets by Pearce and Hughes alerted their followers and a slurry of re-reports pointed everyone else in the same direction.
So much so The Athletic’s website temporarily crashed with the amount of traffic it was getting bombarded with – see below:
