If Joe Gomez can keep a clean bill of health throughout the 2020/21 season, it’s possible he’ll make his 100th Premier League appearance for Liverpool before his 24th birthday.
That alone is incredible, likely often overlooked by Trent Alexander-Arnold’s meteoric rise at Anfield – but that’s not a reflection on the centre-half, who is arguably the best Englishman in his position.
Gomez has Premier League, Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup winners’ medals hanging in his home, and is part of one of Europe’s best defences, there are no doubts over his class.
There had been whispers about his future, with Joel Matip keeping him out of the side after an injury – but the big man himself has admitted there’s nowhere else he’d rather be, as Liverpool is now “home”.
Speaking to the club’s official site, Gomez explained his son is now a Scouser and how the Reds and their city have blown him away. “It’s just become everything I could have imagined and more,” he said.
“I came when I was 18 and I didn’t really know anything other than the little bubble in south-east London and I didn’t ever imagine how big the club could be and what impact it could have on my life.
“I can definitely say it’s been the best five years of my life. Had some tough times but they’ve helped shape me and I wouldn’t have wanted to spend them, good or bad, anywhere else.
“The city, the people and the club, the staff and everything that makes the club, the supporters. I’ve grown up here. My little boy is a Scouser now and it’s home for me and there’s nowhere else I’d rather be.”
